Green-billed Malkoha (Phướn lớn)

Conservation status: LC

The Green-billed Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus tristis), known in Vietnamese as Phướn lớn.

Key Identification Features:

  • Long-tailed bird with dark grey plumage.

  • Greenish, slightly curved bill, giving the bird its name.

  • Prominent red facial skin around the eye.

  • Long, graduated tail with white tips on the underside.

  • Typically moves stealthily in dense foliage, often hard to spot despite its size.

Habitat:

  • Found in lowland forests, secondary growth, and dense shrublands.

  • Tràm Chim’s mixture of wetlands and scrubland provides suitable habitat.

These birds are non-parasitic cuckoos and feed mainly on insects, making them beneficial for pest control.
